Answers to the most popular questions about Art Therapy and EMDR

FAQs Art Therapy

  • Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy that uses creative processes, like drawing, painting, and sculpting, to help individuals explore emotions, improve self-awareness, and enhance emotional regulation, particularly when words are difficult to find.

Under the guidance of a professional art therapist, clients use art to communicate and process complex feelings, ultimately leading to improved psychosocial, physical, cognitive, and spiritual health

  • While art materials are often used, art therapy is much more than just coloring! It's a form of psychotherapy that utilizes artistic expression as a primary tool for exploring emotions, resolving conflicts, and fostering self-awareness. Think of it as a unique language your mind and body can speak, bypassing the limitations of words alone.

  • Art therapy is beneficial for people of all ages and backgrounds, from children struggling with communication to adults navigating life challenges. So, if you're curious about exploring yourself through creativity, give art therapy a try! You might be surprised by what you discover.

  • There are 4 key components to Art Therapy…

    1. Guided by a trained therapist: You'll work with a professional who understands both art and therapy, offering support and guidance as you create.

    2. Focus on process, not product: It's not about artistic skill or creating masterpieces. The focus is on the journey of creating, expressing emotions, and reflecting on the experience.

    3. Tailored to your needs: Whether you're facing anxiety, trauma, or simply seeking self-discovery, the therapist will adapt the approach to your individual goals.

    4. Multimodal expression: While art materials are common, movement, music, and other creative forms can also be used depending on your preferences.

FAQs EMDR

  • EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It's a therapy technique that uses rhythmic eye movements (or other forms of bilateral stimulation) to help you process and heal from past trauma. Think of it as gently nudging your brain to re-file painful memories in a less distressing way.

  • Not at all! While it's known for helping people with PTSD, EMDR can also address anxiety, depression, phobias, and even everyday stresses. Imagine chipping away at negative emotions, one eye movement at a time.

  • The science behind it is still being explored, but some theories suggest that eye movements activate your brain's natural processing abilities, helping you integrate and desensitize to disturbing memories. Think of it as hitting the "reset" button on your emotional response.

  • EMDR is a gentle and collaborative process guided by a trained therapist. They'll assess your needs and ensure you feel safe and comfortable throughout the session. Imagine it as a guided journey, not a rollercoaster ride.

  • Every journey is unique. Some people experience relief within sessions, while others need more time. But research suggests it can be faster than traditional talk therapy. Think of it as a marathon, not a sprint, but with frequent pit stops for progress checks.

  • While effective for many, it's not a magic bullet. Some people might find other therapies more helpful. The key is finding a good fit between you, your therapist, and the approach. Think of it as finding the right tool for the job, and EMDR might be the perfect wrench for some mental hurdles.

  • While less common, some therapists offer online EMDR sessions. It's important to ensure your therapist is trained and experienced in online delivery. Remember, a strong therapeutic relationship is crucial, even through a screen.

    • Health Savings Accounts: Another way to cover the cost of therapy is to use your Health Savings Account or Healthcare Flexible Spending Account card to pay for treatment. To do this, submit your HSA or HFSA card in the form asking for a credit card number.

    • I can accept debit cards, credit cards, checks, cash, and health savings account cards as payment.

    • In compliance with the No Surprises Federal Healthcare Act that took effect on January 1, 2022, all healthcare providers must notify clients of their federal rights and protections against "surprise billing." This Act requires that I inform you of your federally protected rights to receive a notification when services are rendered by an out-of-network provider, if a client is uninsured, or if they elect not to use their insurance.

    • You need to be aware that by choosing to forgo using your insurance for services or an out-of-network provider, you are choosing to pay more for services than you would if you were using your insurance benefits.

    • Additionally, I am required to provide you with a Good Faith Estimate of the cost of services. It is difficult to determine the true length of treatment for mental health care, and each client has the right to decide how long they would like to participate in mental health care. Therefore, attached you will find the Practice Services and Fees Schedule for the services typically offered by me as your therapist. You and I will collaborate on a regular basis to determine how many sessions you may need to reach your treatment goals. It is a federal requirement that I have each client sign this document to begin/resume treatment. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.
